The Flower Collection

Hi guys, so I'm not doing Blogmas this year.. even if I wanted to - it's 12 days in already lol. Maybe next year, or maybe i'll do Eastmas for Easter! (I need to stop don't I?).

I'm glad to show you guys my latest collection that I completed over about 3-4 months with a colour scheme of Red and Blue inspired by flowers. I'm not going to do an individual description for each of them as they're all identical but I'll explain the process x

Firstly I started off brainstorming, I usually get my ideas from watching fashion shows on youtube (recommended channel - fatalefashioniii). I also createed a board on pinterest about flowers, flower fashion etc.

Secondly I started my sketching process and then I inked (finelined), lastly I coloured with my markers.

Materials used:

  • Youtube
  • Pinterest
  • Faber Castell Sketch Set
  • Faber Castell Putty eraser
  • Unipin fineliner 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8
  • Copic Ciao markers 72 B set
  • Finecolour markers 36 set

Monday 7 December 2015

a random emotional blog post.

When the world gets me down... I switch off. My phone and my iPod. Then I experience all sort of emotions... usually they're negative. It all ends in anger and me wanting to express my feelings, to someone or something - that's why I wrote this blog post.

Do you ever feel, you have what it takes to succeed but because of certain things or people you'll never be able to achieve it?

I'm incredibly proud and I thank God that he gave me artistic hands but, strangely it's not recognised. I'm seen as boring because i'm not like other girls.

Art has been one long journey for me, I started giving up several times and noticed that many people were much better. It took ages to perfect it and I still am. I have confidence in my talent. I have a lack of self confidence because of the environment around me and it was actually an incident that sparked this blog post. A lot of people say and think I show off, not to my face though - however I know in my heart that I worked hard to get this far, I worked hard to own the amount of pens and paints that I do.

At my stage in life, I guess its about socializing, forming relationships and well - being a teen. I'm finding it hard to grow up I guess. We all go from not caring about what we look like, to spending hours in the bathroom. We all go from toys and Disney movies to makeup and cell phones.

I tried to make this change too fast and wished I had slowed down. Everyone I ever changed myself for never deserved it really.

I just feel emotionally unstable at the moment so yeah, end of rant.

CHAOS!!!

So, those who have been following my blog for a while would know that this time last year I was doing blogmas - that's gone super fast. Unfortunately due to my schedule this year, I can't fit blogmas into my plans :(. I will have Christmas themed posts however, I just cannot do them everyday. I'm in semi exam mode and I also will be going on holiday to Ghana on the 15th so i'll be cut off from any wifi for about 2 days lol, so that would have taken a few days out of blogmas anyway...

Well, it's all been chaos lately. I'm approaching exams, making a new portfolio, sleepless nights and teenage thoughts. It's all really strange and hectic but hopefully I should get through it soon.

Love you all, Lauren x

Spoken word: What's really up in 2015.

Aside from the usual fashion arty posts, today is quite serious. I wrote a poem out of boredom to reflect our generation. Warning contains strong language.

It's entitled "That's how we do it in 2015", it addresses a few of the issues that we have going on as teenagers in today's life.

I'd really love to read your thoughts on what I wrote so please comment below and lets get a conversation started!

20 Facts about me

20 FACTS ABOUT ME

I have tried not to make this post really typical and put boring posts in so bear with me!

1. I am Royalty

Yes, that's right! I intend to make another post explaining this in better detail but, In Ghana I come from a town called Bompata. There my Grandma is Queen Mother and my Grandad is King. This has been in the family for many years and will eventually come down to me. They stick to hardcore tradition but it looks a lot of fun.

2. I'm scared of Rats

I can't stand such vermin and I don't understand how they can be kept as pets! I'm so afraid of them I was thinking about sleeping outside when they invaded our house.

3. Friends

I have a lot of friends and only three best friends. Two are girls and one is boy. Those who know me well can guess who they are.

4. One day I'll be the worlds most famous pen hoarder

I'm currently on the right track with 1000's of miscellaneous pens and 48 finecolour markers, 72 copic ciao's and 20 promarkers.

5. Leytonstone from Birth

I was born at Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone and currently in 2015 I live a road away from that hospital lol.

6.  I've had more of the same phone than the average person. LOL what?

Well let me explain my phone journey. Around 10 I got the LG pink flip, around 11 I got the LG Cookie, at 13 I got a blackberry curve 8520 and then I got a blackberry curve 9360 (one broke so I got another of that) and then I finally got an iPhone 4! (One broke so I got another iPhone 4) Followed by an iPhone 5c (sadly stolen by you know who connaught girls) and then a Sony Xperia and Currently a Samsung Galaxy S4 and an Apple iPod 5th gen.

7. Relationship status - confused with it all.

8. Worst Lesson at school - RE and French

9. Role Model - Lupita Nyongo

10. Hidden talent

Some say I can sing, I'm not too sure. I sing occasionally at school shows and all but I don't know lol!

11. Favourite country - Ghana no doubt or question!

12. Ugh.

Earrings annoy me so much, if I wear them it's for an occasion. I fiddle, they get itchy and annoying and I end up taking them off.

13. I have a terrible diet

I eat what I find, I don't watch the food content or calories. If it's nice, it's nice.

14. My favourite homecooked meals

Has to be Jollof rice and red red (Palm oil and black eyed beans and plantain)

15. I'm not sporty.

I hate sports, I will do anything to get out of them and I don't try at all in PE. If I need to book an appointment,  I make sure it's when I have PE.

16. My favourite drink is supermalt

Ask anyone who's seen me on my way home or to school. If I'm not drinking some malt it means i've has a bad day...

17. I prefer old school tunes to what we have now

If I listen to music in english at all, I take it back to the times of TLC, Aaliyah, BoyzIIMen, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Destiny's child and so on. It's when music made sense to be honest. Now we have anaconda - kill me now.

18. Someone has broken my heart before

I'm still young so it's not that bad but sadly I've been taken for granted before and it only all came to an end yesterday but that's a story for another day!

19. I'm amazingly good with accents

I can do most accents around the world really good, I don't know where I got that from anyway but yeah!

20. I love to draw - stating the obvious right?

Lol, thanks so much for reading guys. If you missed out on any recent posts:

31st October OOTD and Face beat

Some of you were busy pumpkin carving and dressing up for Halloween, my Saturday was completely different to yours and I'm here to tell you all about it! I thought favourites are getting boring so why not do an ootd!

I woke up around 7 am on Saturday because it was my new born Cousin's naming and Christening, I had to travel to Watford and that meant an hour car journey. Surprisingly afterwards we found out that a really important guest had arrived in the UK from Ghana. He happens to be the king of our home town and we got to meet him yesterday! We met him in The Gold Coast Bar in South Norwood, London where we ate exotic Ghanaian food and had a great time.

OOTD:

My picture is not amazingly clear or full, but for the day I wore a Lace layer midi dress which was whitish/creamish and it's from True Decadence and it cost me £35.00. I wore plain black heels from next too. Accompanied by the dress was a plain black blazer (had it for ages not sure where it's from) and a choker from M&S costing £5.50 on sale.
Mother and me!

FACEBEAT:

This was a special occasion so I thought why not have a face beat! For those of you who are confused, a face beat is beating  your face with cosmetics until looks as desired. I decided to go for a light look to match my dress.

Foundation - L'oreal Paris Perfect Match Foundation in (Cappuchino)
Highlight - Revlon Photoready (Cappuchino)
Contour - Sleek CC Cream (Dark) (I hardly did any contour but yeah)
Eyeshadow - Me Makeover Essentials (Transition colour stone grey mixed with coffee and crease colour baby pink)
Eye liner - W7 Liquid eyeliner
Dimples from plain old dimple shop
Lips - Good old Vaseline.

It took about an hour and a half to get ready, overall I had a great day and it was super fun! Let me know if you'd like anymore OOTD's x

Art Haul - October 2015

Today I will be doing an art haul yay! It's been a while since I did one of these and my last major buy was my finecolour markers and if you didn't read about those then please click the link below to see the review I wrote on that:

So, usually I do my art shopping from eBay or Hobbycraft but these recent buys have been from Waterstones - weird right? I'm about to tell you How that came to be!

My mum works in the Principals office at UCL so they're always throwing away a bunch of goodies and mum being mum always brings them home. This time she stumbled upon a draw full of Waterstones vouchers valid for two years and she bought two home worth £25 each! My Brother wasn't interested so I used both!

1. Faber Castell Kneadable Eraser

Waterstones had a very tiny art section so I ended up buying this eraser for £1.99. I have seen it before on certain youtube videos and with some good artists so I thought I'd buy it and try it out, I have not tried it out yet since I bought it only today and I'll be drawing after this blog post, testing all the new products.

2. Faber Castell Artist PITT pens

These cost me £13.99 and I must say as beautiful as they look they let me down... I'm a marker hoarder so I know exactly what I'm looking for and I thought I'd go for it because I'm familiar with Faber Castell products. They behave exactly like felt tips, when you try to layer or blend them the bleed and the paper starts to peel and I feel like I've wasted so much of the gift card. The set I bought was the most random assortment which doesn't make sense either... I had green, yellow, flesh pink, grey, brown and cinnamon they aren't blendable which make them hard to use. I tried to experiment with different kinds of paper and I found that these pens can only layer with water colour paper which is very annoying. So, I ended up just using them as regular felt tips for my revision notes.

3. Daler Rowney A5 Sketchbook

This was £7.99. I've owned a Daler Rowney sketchbook before and they're so awesome. They can take whatever you chuck at them whether it is ink, marker, watercolour, acrylic etc and you will have no bleeding or nasty blotches. The paper is very strong and the cover comes in plain black, leaving you to be creative and design the front.

4. Gertie's New Fashion Sketchbook

This book cost me £10.99 and it's just a big book full of croquis, this is really helpful for me and just pushes forward my drawing process by 5 mins since the figures are already drawn. I'd really recommend this to a beginner in Fashion illustration to help with figure drawing.

Hopefully sometime soon I will be posting short reviews on all these products so please keep an eye out for that, also coming up soon is October Favourites so watch out! Thanks for reading.

What's in my makeup bag?

I've been wanting to do this post for ages and now it's finally here!

Disclaimer: I'm defo not a beauty whiz, but I know the basics and the do's and donts so I advice that if you are looking for professional help please head somewhere else! This is just me posting on my blog, lets go!

Foundations, BB'S and CC creams.

These are not the only 3 i'll be showing, it's just that these ones could have their picture taken because they're in a clean state.

1. L'oreal Paris Perfect Match Foundation in Cappuccino

This is my main foundation because it's closest to my skin tone, so after a primer (which sadly my friend decided to never return) this is the first thing I apply. I actually only bought this yesterday on sale in Westfield's Superdrug for £5.99. It's not much of a foundation that gives a natural look but then I prefer the shiny, glittery look it gives. If used properly it gives full coverage however I have only tried it on my hand as i'm saving most of it for an christening on Saturday.

2. Revlon Photoready Airbrush effect Foundation

In the above picture I used the revlon photoready foundation to highlight my forehead,
cheeks, nose and cupids bow.
I use this foundation as a concealer for highlighting however that's not what it was meant for but when I apply it to my face it's too light for my skin and makes me look grey and patchy, it's also very glittery and that's not a good combo. I thought it would be good because the colour was cappuccino and most of my face products are either in the colour cappuccino or cocoa. A little shimmer is great, however if I apply this to my skin I start to look like foil which is terrible so for me thats a con. However it work's lovely as a highlight.

3. Sleek CC Cream (Dark)

This foundation was mentioned in Septemeber favourites, so you guys might have heard of it! For me it's used at both a foundation and contour thingy. In the summer I go darker therefore it works as a foundation then. When I'm in winter, spring and autumn it's used as a contour because it's darker than my skin, not that much but about one shade darker so it creates a smooth contour. It was used in the previous picture to contour cheekbones.

4. Fashion Fair oil free foundation

I learnt about fashion fair from my mum because it's the makeup brand she's been using all her life since a teen, they're specifically for women of colour. It's my perfect go to foundation that gives full coverage and leaves a natural glow too. It's very expensive however lately I discovered eBay and it's saved my pocket a bit.

4. Sleek Bare skin foundation

This is my favourite out of all of them, it matches me the best literally! I loved it and now it's finished, however if i'm desperate for it, I know I can always call on my bestfriend. If you're reading i'm sorry for repeatedly stealing your foundation Micha, I love you!

Eye stuff

1. Me Makeover Essentials

I'm not great with eyeshadow therefore I don't have a lot of it, I have a bunch of eye shadows and lip stuff in a little set from "Me" makeup essentials.

Shout out to Charlie Marrie for getting me this for my birthday this year, I love it and it's tiny, portable and cute and comes with mini brushes inside.

2. W7 eyeliner

I've had this eyeliner for almost a year, I bought from a market in Romford and this market stall had the most amazing stuff and it was all so cheap! It was putting boots out of business! This is a pretty good liner, it has quite a thick point, that's good for me because I don't like my eyeliner lines too thin. It's also pretty easy to create a flick with.

3. Rimmel London Kohl eyeliner pencil

This eyeliner pencil, I've had for two years because I don't use it as much the liquid ones. It's great for creating a dark smoky eye and blends better than a liquid one would with eye shadow. Most of the time when I've worn this eyeliner I've had a bold eye shadow to back it up because I have this eyeliner in Jet black which is really dark so the contrast is needed on a dark skinned person like me to really make things pop.

4. Miss sixty 24 hour pump up booster mascara

This is one of my favourite mascara's, however the only downfall is that it takes ages to dry and it's really wet, so if you are the type to just want to put makeup on and go in the mornings without letting it set it is probably not for you. It's really cheap, I think it is £2.99 in Superdrug.

5.  Rimmel London Lash Accelerator

I've had this mascara for about two years, it's almost finished but I like using the brush to separate clumps. It's incredibly cheap and you get it for free when you spend over a certain amount in some shops but usually it's just £1.99.

6. Collection Supersize Fat Lash Mascara

I've actually never used this lol, It's just there for an in case. I didn't check and I bought it brown, which puts me off and that's part of the reason I don't use it.

7. Lash Double Volume edition 40

I have a few of these from superdrug and I love them!!! Easy to apply, the glue actually holds! Also they're inexpensive.

Lips

1. Mua Makeup Academy Lipstick in Shade 10

I bought this lipstick from superdrug for just a pound and it was a bargain because I love this colour, dark reds and purples suit me so it's great.

2. Fashion Fair Lipstick in the colour Grapesicle

I adore this lipstick because it's just wow, the colour is such a fall colour and looks great on dark skinned girls like me.

I don't do my eyebrows much so usually when I do makeup they're just there undone lol, but I like them nice and natural. Thanks so much, if you have any product suggestions of what to buy please comment below, if you think you have any post ideas please comment below and just generally comment on the post. Please don't forget to leave your blog address so I can check your blogs out and follow them.

The Fashion Illustration series: The Getting started with Fashion Illiustration

Hey everybody! I've started with a new series that I think I'll stick with and it's called the Fashion illustration series. I will be making a series of blog posts to explain my fashion process and how I do what I do. The posts will be in posts where you can work your way up to more advanced things.

The first post is how to get started with all this fashion art hoo ha. I've broken it down into useful steps. It's probably best to do these in order too.

1. Decide a go to method

By a Go to method I mean a method you can just wack out without any planning or thought. My Go to method is sketching, finelining, inking and finishing. Yours maybe different, play around with the order in which you do things and find what's best for you.

To look at an easy go to method to try click here to see my "9 Steps for drawing blog post"

2. Source your inspiration

I cannot stress enough on this step!!!!!! So many beginners in fashion illustration give up too quickly because they don't do enough research and they run out of ideas. Inspiration is key because it gets very annoying staring at a blank page for long. There's so many ways to be inspired;
  • Watch Tv shows - WATCH YOUTUBE!
  • Use pinterest, tumblr and your social networks
  • Use Vogue and Elle
  • Watch FataleFashion on Youtube for fashion shows
  • Read fashion magazines
When you've gathered all your inspiration, don't discard of it, make a moodboard so you can always go back to it.

An example of a moodboard/visual research in my GCSE Art sketchbook
3. Keep a sketchbook

If you don't keep a sketchbook ideas could disappear from your head very fast, it's always good to carry a small one (about A5 in size) to help jot down ideas and do quick sketches so you don't forget things.

4.Watch tutorials

It's likely that if you're a beginner you don't know much, so watching tutorials is key. When it comes to Fashion illustration some good Youtube channels are:
  • FSketcher
  • Zyra Banez
  • Shah Design
  • Fashion Teaching
  • Fashion Artventures
That's basically all you need to get started, thanks for reading x

September Favourites

September is finally over! It's like the most terrifying and annoying month for students! September has been a really successful month for me because I've settled back into school well and progressed with a lot of my art work too. I'd just like to say that suggestions are welcome since I have no idea what to blog about lately, so please drop some ideas in the comments!

BACK TO THE POINT! September Favourites.

Beauty

September has been a month of non stop school and I don't really wear makeup to school (excluding non uniform days). So I've just based this on what I was I was liking through out the summer.

 Sleek CC Cream (Dark)

It's incredibly hard to shop for makeup if you're a dark skinned person and when you tend to find it it's very expensive which is annoying because lighter shades are much cheaper which in my opinion is unfair but then that's a debate for another day lol. I have been liking this CC cream because of its smell. Most foundations have terrible smells. I have 3 of them because they were too dark for my friends and they bought the wrong colour. I couldn't use it for a while too because it was too dark for me too! Summer came and I was getting darker so it helped really and it was great. This is currently my only favourite when it comes to beauty so maybe when October is over then I'll have some new favourites.

Music

You guys know I'm a huge afrobeat fan and I absolutely love afrobeats, I have plenty of favourite artists, but I'll only list a few. These are my top five. One being the best and 5 being the least.

5. Ayo Jay

Ayo Jay has two awesome hits that I love! He's Nigerian as you can tell. I love his voice because he sounds a bit like a kid and it's cute! My two favourite songs this month have been:

Your Number (remix) ft Fetty Wap
Available

4. Wizkid - Expensive sh*t

Wizkid is my overall favourite afrobeats star but this month some songs have beat him. I personally like this song because you can hear and feel the afro and not just the beat. A lot of afrobeat artists are modernizing and westernizing and it's no more afrobeat but just 'beat'. He does a good job at keeping the Afro flow.

3. Patoranking ft Wande Coal - My woman

I have been so obsessed with this song!!! It has been on replay everyday and it won't get out of my head! It's so catchy and was produced by Ghana's sickest DJ - DJ Breezy. The mastermind behind a lot of Ghana's superstars (Joey B. D -Black etc).

2. Cynthia Morgan

To be honest, I only discovered this woman in August and it was probably the best thing I ever did. She is amazing literally - probably the African Nicki Minaj. She has the whole singing and rap thing in her own dancehall style and it's awesome, My favourite songs are:

  • Come and do
  • German Juice
  • Gat your back ft Stonebwoy and Harmonee
  • Mc Galaxy - Go Gaga remix ft Cynthia Morgan

1. Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi is my favourite artist this month. He killed me when he dropped Skintight featuring my favourite Ghanaian soulstress - Efya. The song touches my heart and his voice is unique and his flow is really cool. I also like how he's an artist whose songs have meaning to them. My favourite songs are;

  • Skintight ft Efya
  • Pipi Dance ft Klu
  • Jelele ft MsVee
  • Bankulize ft Papi Kojo

Books

Books are not normally a thing I do but I started reading one for my history class and got really interested in it.

The colour purple is a great book about the Deep south in America when Blacks and Whites were segregated and slavery was around, its a great read however the words are quite graphic.

Thank you guys so much for reading my post x

well - The new school year.

Well haven't I been the most terrible blogger ever? Inconsistent, short, stubby posts.

I just want you guys to know that the reason I haven't been posting is that September is a pretty busy month (as you all know). New school year. This is my last year in school so the pressure is on me to get my head down and really do some work but I will try and post as much as I can.

  • Back to early mornings
  • Annoying people
  • Boring Classes
  • Late nights
  • Not enough sleep
  • etc.
I will try and post once every week, so please watch out for that x

Copic Marker Alternative - Finecolour Markers

Hey guys! Today I'm going to be talking about a Copic Marker alternative that I've recently purchased to hopefully help those on their "perfect pen" quest.

These pens are called Finecolour markers, unheard of right? They took me by surprise as well! I found out about these pens whilst watching a video called "Copic Marker Alternatives" by Baylee Jae on YouTube and I was instantly taken away by their price and I was onto it straight away! So today I'm here to tell you guys about the pros and cons and how they work in comparison to my copics and promarkers! Let's get started!

Disclaimer; I'm not sponsored, I just have a love for what I do so I invest a lot in it. I also don't get everything in one go, I get bits and pieces as I go along and I started collecting a few years ago that's why I have a lot of pens :). Also this is my personal opinion about these pens which is nor right or wrong!

So here's my brief intro in quick bullet point form:
  • Cheap copic marker alternative
  • Double ended tip
  • Available in 180 colours
  • Alcohol based markers

So, I found out about these markers from Baylee Jae on youtube. She had a video called "Copic marker alternatives". I recommend watching that very much to find about other Copic marker alternatives. Hearing about these pens was probably one of the best days ever and I ordered them from eBay immediately after watching the video.

Pros:
  • Incredibly Cheap
From eBay, I got a set of 36 colours and they cost me about £14 but that was because I had a half price voucher. If you were to purchase them normally you're looking at about £25 which is still cheap to me. If you were to buy the Copic Ciao 36 set it would cost you £59.81 (and that's the eBay price).
  • Alcohol based (Like Copics and Promarkers)
They are made with alcohol, so they still do the same job as Copics just with less quality.
  • Blendable
They do not come with a colourless blender but if you use colours in the same colour group they do blend, you just have to layer it more to make sure all the colours blend in.
  • Dual ended (Double ended)
Just like The Copic Ciao's and Sketches they're double ended with a bullet tip and a chisel tip. However Copic's have a brush tip which cleans up your drawing and the Finecolour's have a bullet tip which makes your drawing looks more rough. Whatever your drawing style, this may be a pro or a con for you.
  • Rectangular Shape
This is a pro because unlike Copic Ciao's (which are round) they don't roll around the surface that you're drawing on.

  • They Hold more ink than Copics
This means they will last longer, in general the round markers hold less ink than the rectangular shaped ones.
  • Colour Codes
They have colour codes ontop unlike the Copic Ciao's and it is easier to pick out colours once you know them.

Cons:
  • Not as bright as Copics
The ink quality is probably a 75 instead of 100 but it still does the job however they just look a bit patchy in comparison to the Copic Ciao's.
  • Looks very much like a Copic Sketch copy
They didn't do very well in making it look unique, it looks exactly like a Copic Sketch which puts people off but might be a con because you can sort of tell people you bought Copic's lol.

  • Available in only 112 colours
Copic Ciao's are available in 180 colours and Sketch markers have over 200 colours.
  • Not refillable
Unfortunately you can't refill Finecolour markers and with Copic's you can. If a colour runs out the only way you'd find it again is to buy another set because so far where I shop (eBay) they do not sell them individually.
  • Long shipping time
The delivery may take a while because they do not have these anywhere in the world but China. If You're looking for a marker made In the UK I suggest you go for Letraset.

Who are these for? -  Beginner artists who are exploring or people on a tight budget.
Worthy of their Price? - Definitely

Do they achieve their purpose?

They do the exact same thing as Copic's, it's just that the end result looks a little bit patchy and rough.

What could make it better?
  • A brush tip
  • Better quality ink
  • A better design
The results

This is a drawing done with only Finecolour markers:

This is a drawing done with only Copic Ciao's:

Buying Advice:

Have you decided if they're for you? If they are then here's some advice for when buying them:

  • The best place to buy them is eBay - no rip off just real prices
  • If the Price is higher or the same as Copic's you're being ripped off.
  • If you're not sure about them the best set to get is the 36 set or 12 set.
Well my Lovelies, thank you so much for reading my lengthy review and if there's anymore things you'd like to see on This Blog to do with my art and materials please comment below.
